An Inside View of One of Our Programs

My name is Samantha Watson. I recently finished my internship with the Adults Adopting Special Kids (AASK) program and was hired as a social worker for the Pregnancy, Parenting, and Adoption Services (PPAS) program in the Fargo office. The PPAS program provides counseling and support to pregnant women, adoption services to waiting families and birth parents wanting to make an adoption plan, and search services to adopted adults seeking their birth parents or vice versa.

In the last few weeks, I have been learning a lot about the PPAS program and what some of my job responsibilities will look like. One responsibility that I have particularly enjoyed is working on search cases. Upon receiving the search forms and the search fee from the adopted adult or birth parent, we begin trying to locate the individual being searched. Once located, North Dakota search law allows 60 days for the individual to decide whether or not they want contact with the adopted adult or birth parent.

The search process is an exciting one to be involved in. It is enjoyable to be able to assist in reintroducing adopted adults and their birth relatives. Cases in which the process runs smoothly and long-lasting relationships are formed are particularly rewarding.
